Abstract:  Peralta Community College District 1961 - 92

Roger Ferragallo's Peralta Community College District (PCCD) career as an administrator and instructor of art, cinema, television and photography spanned a period of over 32 years in Oakland, California (from 1960 through 1992). In 1960 at Laney College Ferragallo founded and chaired the department of Art and co-founded and chaired the department of (television) Media Communications. From 1980 through 1992, he founded and served as the Director of Telecommunications and General Manager of Peralta Colleges Television (PCTV) until he retired in 1992.

Proposals for Multiple Projection and a Perceptual Learning Center, 1964-65

During 1964 I initiated a classroom environment for teaching Art History and Appreciation where I began to employ multiple slide projection on a wide 12' screen. This early experience with analogical image trains excited students and caused me to begin thinking seriously about creating a new kind of non-traditional teaching environment. I presented my college administration planning proposals in January and April of 1965 for creating what I then called a "Perceptual Learning Center." My purpose was to establish a unique classroom calling for multiple image slide projection with a mix of other imaging technologies and the total control of sound and light--all to convey greatly enhanced perceptual delivery of instructional experience to my students.

Multiple screen projection was very important and with the help of an equipment donation from the Eastman Kodak Company this lead in 1966 to the design of a unique lectern which controlled three projectors in a piano like responsive arrangement allowing for comparative and analogical image arrays to be projected in any of seven possible combinations.
